Summary

Dublin, 1918: three days in a maternity ward at the height of the great flu。 A small world of work, risk, death and unlooked-for love, by the bestselling author of The Wonder and Room。

In an Ireland doubly ravaged by war and disease, Nurse Julia Power works at an understaffed hospital in the city centre, where expectant mothers who have come down with the terrible new flu are quarantined together。 Into Julia’s regimented world step two outsiders—Doctor Kathleen Lynn, on the run from the police, and a young volunteer helper, Bridie Sweeney。

In the darkness and intensity of this tiny ward, over three days, these women change each other’s lives in unexpected ways。 They lose patients to this baffling pandemic, but they also shepherd new life into a fearful world。 With tireless tenderness and humanity, caregivers and mothers alike somehow do their impossible work。

In The Pull of the Stars, Emma Donoghue once again finds the light in the darkness in this new classic of hope and survival against all odds。

This book broke my heart。 A rare love story that had me falling in love along side them。 The timing of this book is profound and the story runs parallel to today。

A beautifully told story of the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1918, all set in a Dublin maternity hospital。 Very emotional, gruesome in places, excellent research, especially including the very real Dr Lynn。 One huge annoyance for me was the absence of speech marks, why on earth was that necessary?! It ruined the story for me initially, I had to get used to it and then go back and re-read the beginning for it to make sense。 Obviously it was a deliberate move on the part of the author, but I seriously A beautifully told story of the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1918, all set in a Dublin maternity hospital。 Very emotional, gruesome in places, excellent research, especially including the very real Dr Lynn。 One huge annoyance for me was the absence of speech marks, why on earth was that necessary?! Drab, no joy and a bit boring。 The subject matter is intense。 Ireland 1918。 Maternity ward full of expectant mothers with the Spanish flu, the horror of Irish Catholic institutions like the mother and baby house, wounded soldiers home from the war, women getting the vote for the first time。 And if you cant draw me in to any of these stories then make the characters compelling。 A big miss。

This book had so much promise and then wrapped up with a huge WTF?It seemed like a short story gone long and then abruptly finished。

Wow! This book just floored me。 I don't see how anyone can give it anything less than five stars。 Most books, if they're good, you finish and say "Hey, that was pretty good。" This book。。。I finished it and spent about 10 minutes just staring at the wall。 It is not for the faint of heart; if you don't like reading about bodily fluids or tales of suffering, steer clear。 Wow! This might have been the BEST book I have ever read。 I didn’t want it to end。 I so hope there will be a sequel following nurse Julia Power and her brother through the end of the flu pandemic, and into raising the infant boy。 It was brilliantly written, the characters were amazing, and it was laced with information about the Influenza pandemic of the early 1900’s。 5/5 stars! I loved it so much。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 3。8I liked the character development in the story, and the resilience and determination of Dr。 Lynn。 I also really like Bridie。 I did not think the one night secret romance added anything to this story, beyond the panic that Julia was feeling about Bridie dying。 The grim reality of religious beliefs and class stereotypes is well laid out in this story。 The Catholic ideal during WW1 and the shunning of orphans and unwed mothers is profound and a highlight in this story。

Chosen by a friend in my book club, this is yet another book I never would have come across on my own。 A story of pandemic, while in the middle of Covid makes it feel more real, and yet much more scary than what we are living through at the moment。 It feels very accurate to the time it is written about (1918) and truly makes me thankful for the time I'm living in。 The details at times made me queasy with medical jargon。 The people felt real and this could easily be a work of fiction-which afterw Chosen by a friend in my book club, this is yet another book I never would have come across on my own。 A story of pandemic, while in the middle of Covid makes it feel more real, and yet much more scary than what we are living through at the moment。 It feels very accurate to the time it is written about (1918) and truly makes me thankful for the time I'm living in。 The details at times made me queasy with medical jargon。 The people felt real and this could easily be a work of fiction-which afterwards I learned that at least one character was real。 I love the variety of stories I'm getting to read these days thanks to my bookclub-I'd recommend everyone to join one! 。。。more

Set during the flu pandemic of 1918, this is very timely for the pandemic we live in now。 It is told by a midwife working on a makeshift fever maternity ward。 There is an unexpected romance and many heart-breaking moments。 The details about delivery and care of the mothers are sometimes excruciating。

I felt torn about my opinions whilst reading this book。 It is the height of the Spanish flu pandemic in a Dublin hospital in the closing days of the Great War。 Not only do we have the issues of pandemic but First World War horrors, Catholicism horrors, acute poverty, Fenian politics and Empire。 A melting pot of issues honed in on a makeshift maternity "ward" for motherhood and the "grippe" At times this propelled the novel and at other times, it felt too much, - sour nuns, the butchery of male d I felt torn about my opinions whilst reading this book。 It is the height of the Spanish flu pandemic in a Dublin hospital in the closing days of the Great War。 Not only do we have the issues of pandemic but First World War horrors, Catholicism horrors, acute poverty, Fenian politics and Empire。 A melting pot of issues honed in on a makeshift maternity "ward" for motherhood and the "grippe" At times this propelled the novel and at other times, it felt too much, - sour nuns, the butchery of male doctors, domestic violence, the fate of unmarried mothers, children in the hands of the Church。。。wave upon wave felt like melodrama but that said, this was a reflection of how it was。The fascinating elements were, I discovered at the end, those based in fact, the social history and the female doctor, one of the story's protagonists。 Just finished the book feeling that less might have been more。 。。。more

The lack of punctuation drove me crazy。 It was a great story until the last fifty pages。 The ending left much to be desired。

I loved this one from start to finish。 It’s just a solidly good story about a fascinating time and place。 It didn’t try to be overly literary or do more than just tell a compelling human story, set over the course of three days。 Some of the plot developments were very predictable, but I didn’t mind at all。 It was especially fascinating to read about another pandemic situation and also to read about what was and was not understood about medicine, germs, and childbirth practices at the time!

Really enjoyed this book and it left me wanted more。 The characters are well written and I especially fell in love with the character Birdie。

Captivating and Nicely Paced StoryThis was a captivating and enjoyable story thanks to the author’s ability to set the mood and carry it forward with sentences that flowed into paragraphs and paragraphs that accumulated into chapters and before I realized it the story had ended。 I wish I could read the rest of the life story of Julia, Barnabus and Tim。

Set in Ireland 1918 at height of flu pandemic。 Fascinating and familiar。 Masks, sanitizing, recommending 10-foot distances around patients, increased ventilation。 Devastated economy。 Propaganda。 Overwhelmed health workers and hospitals。 If we weren't living through this time of COVID-19, I might have considered it unrealistic。 But now。。。This is a book that is lovely and heartbreaking, fascinating and sad。 If anything, it will simply remind you that history repeats itself and the human condition Set in Ireland 1918 at height of flu pandemic。 Fascinating and familiar。 Masks, sanitizing, recommending 10-foot distances around patients, increased ventilation。 Devastated economy。 Propaganda。 Overwhelmed health workers and hospitals。 If we weren't living through this time of COVID-19, I might have considered it unrealistic。 But now。。。This is a book that is lovely and heartbreaking, fascinating and sad。 If anything, it will simply remind you that history repeats itself and the human condition is delicate。 It is a wonder how we survive, and yet it is a story of survival and hope, amid the bleakest conditions。 Something we can all celebrate now。 。。。more

An interesting storyline, covering the Flu Pandemic in Dublin in 1918。 Well researched, and a writing style that I appreciated。 Written with sensitivity, it was an easy enough read and a very emotional read covering two days in a makeshift Maternity/Flu sufferers ward。 Yes, I did cry at the end。

I loved this book so much!! Emma Donaghue writes so wonderfully, with an ability to engage you fully into the lives of her characters。Even though this story is set in 1918, during a pandemic, I still read on, wanting to know what would happen to Nurse Julia Powell, and the women she met throughout her ordeal with sickness and death。Even though there is sadness and death, there is also hope, woven throughout the story。 A twist at the end that I wasn't expecting。 Highly recommend。 I loved this book so much!! Story of a nurse in a Dublin hospital running a make-shift Maternity/Fever ward during the Spanish flu pandemic。 Topics include WW1 effects and the abhorrent treatment of unwed mothers and orphans by the Catholic church in Ireland。

While this was a quick read and I admire the author's ability to write a novel that basically takes place in one room, I felt it was lacking。*Spoiler alert ahead*: There was all this build and build and build and build and then it felt like she kind of panicked in the end and said "Ok let's make it more relevant and let's make them gay。 I didn't buy the relationship at all。 Then things just rapidly ended and didn't fit with the slow plodding of the rest of the story。 While this was a quick read and I admire the author's ability to write a novel that basically takes place in one room, I felt it was lacking。*Spoiler alert ahead*: There was all this build and build and build and build and then it felt like she kind of panicked in the end and said "Ok let's make it more relevant and let's make them gay。 I didn't buy the relationship at all。 Then things just rapidly ended and didn't fit with the slow plodding of the rest of the story。 。。。more

This historical-fictional tale of a maternity ward in Dublin during the Spanish Flu epidemic circa 1918 is particularly fascinating due to our own current circumstances with the coronavirus。 I loved how the character of Dr。 Kathleen Lynn is based on the real-life suffragette and Easter Rising volunteer。 I’m planning to buy this book for my mother, who I think will enjoy it too。
